Navarro River, Mendocino County--

An 83-year-old Sacramento woman, who may have lost consciousness while driving, died on Tuesday when her car went over the bank of the Navarro River in Mendocino county.

California Highway Patrol officer Rick Rajeski was driving southbound on Highway 1 down the grade on the north side of the Navarro River when he saw a northbound car veer to its right up the side of the bank, slide back down onto the roadway, then cut diagonally across the road and go over the bank.

The 1979 brown Buick sedan, with Barbara Willis of Sacramento inside, plunged 110 feet down to the Navarro river and came to a stop upside down in the water, its front end resting against the embankment.

By 3:30 leaking gas streaked the Navarro downstream of the submerged vehicle, as the Mendocino Search & Rescue team launched a red pontoon boat into the river about a quarter mile upstream to retrieve the body.
